New age lingerie is about expressing yourself through your undergarments and loungewear as well as your clothes. Fabrics are developing and becoming less utilitarian, designers are using less obvious materials and your personality can now be depicted through your choice of underwear. Lingerie, in short, now has fashion and trends - and here are just a few of the ways in which lingerie has changed over the past five years...

Creativity and Design

The French have led the way in terms of luxury lingerie for decades but now we can welcome a new era of lingerie design which pushes the boundaries from London. It's all in the new way designers are using different materials that puts the 'Ls' in London Lingerie. There's nothing ambiguous about these designs; they play with materials from leather to heavy embroidery but in a unique and design-led way. Whether this lingerie is dramatic or romantic they're statement pieces which are worthy of putting on show.

Sizing

Another way lingerie manufacturers are developing their ranges is through sizing. Gone are the days of A-C cup bras only. The largest cup size has recently gone up to N cup! Yes, manufacturers are listening to their customers and managing to design bras in larger cup sizes which offer comfort and support. It's incredible to think that the average quality designed bra has 50 different sections joining together to offer the correct distribution of weight. Make no mistake - this, ladies, is a science. Sizing still has a long way to go - especially when it comes to different shapes and designs, but soon every lady can have it all.

Focus on Fabrics

New fabrics are allowing designers to create beautiful luxury lingerie which can be complex yet light and wearable. Bamboo, for instance, is a super fabric. It's made from the pulp of bamboo grass and has been introduced through Chinese exports. It's luxuriously soft, light and has antibacterial properties. It's also great for lounge wear, as it's comfortable and very strong.

Similarly, memory foam is being used more and more in bras. This foam moulds the shape of the bust without causing wrinkles or puckering on the bra cup; it's very comfortable for the wearer and easy to store, as the foam just pops back into shape. Finally, Modal is a trademarked micro-fibre from an Austrian company. It's much more absorbent than cotton so is very breathable for the skin, and is silky, soft and keeps its colour after washing.
